Magento Is Reimagining Commerce: Magento Imagine 2016 Recap

2016 marked the 5th year in a row that Demac has sponsored and exhibited at Magento Imagine. Through all of the smiling and familiar faces of our partners, customers and friends, it was great to see Magento come out of its shell after again becoming a private company last year.

There are few people that can energize a room like Magic Johnson and Jamie Clark, but I thought Mark Lavelle did a great job of highlighting Magento’s commitment to supporting and growing their ecosystem for solution and technology partners alike.

Here are a few of our highlights from Magento Imagine 2016!

2016 Spirit of Excellence

Demac was again recognized for the Spirit of Excellence Award – an honour we received in 2015 which continues to highlight our commitment to and growth within the Magento community.

We are surrounded by peers both inside and outside our company that push us and support us to deliver our best work, along with some of the best customers that envision the possibilities in digital commerce with us.

I would like to congratulate our team on the work done to deserve this honour, and of course push them to repeat it again next year at Imagine 2017!

Omnichannel Experience Award Finalist

I would also like to highlight a customer of ours – Everything Wine – for the work they did to earn a top 3 finalist position in the Omnichannel category at the Magento Imagine 2016 awards ceremony. If you haven’t checked this site out, please go have a look.

We worked with Everything Wine to build a truly omnichannel experience for their customers – like subscription purchases and pick up in store, without the use of an OMS. Allowing us to do build the features we did for Everything Wine is one of the real advantages Magento has in the market so it was more than welcome to see our work get nominated for this particular award.

Magento Cloud

Magento has officially entered the Platform as a Service (PaaS) game with Magento Cloud. This is a welcome addition to the product lineup, something that I think should help lower the barrier to entry for many merchants that want to worry a bit less about technology & infrastructure but still have the flexibility provided by core Magento.

Knowing this announcement was likely on the agenda for Imagine had me wondering about the community’s reaction and/or reception to the new product offering. On one hand, Magento is responding to market demands and on the other they are definitely competing with companies that offered infrastructure/hosting services to their community for years.

If you step back and look at Magento Cloud as a response to customer demand, it makes a lot of sense for Magento to take this step. And while Demac does offer competing services to our merchants today, there are a number of customers that simply aren’t a fit for our own infrastructure services that might be a better fit for Magento Cloud.

Magento Staging and Preview

This is a pretty significant roadmap item for Magento to roll out in their 2.1 release. This new feature set gives merchants the power to create catalog and content releases for their stores and schedule them for release using a user friendly calendar interface. Let’s all be honest, nobody really loves sitting around at midnight during the holidays waiting to activate content for promotions.

We are quite happy to see this as a core platform feature. A number of competing enterprise eCommerce platforms offer similar feature sets and this has been something we’ve been hearing our customers ask for consistently over the years, particularly those merchants updating their catalogs and site content daily or weekly (high frequency).

Outside of its functions, this is just one more thing that the platform is doing to allow merchants to get more advanced administrative tasks done without the need for technical resources.

See You at Imagine 2017!

On the whole show, this year’s show demonstrated a renewed commitment by Magento to all of the things that made them a leading commerce platform to-date.

We are excited about the opportunity and work ahead!
