In this week’s edition of our blog series Magento 2sday (see what we did there?) we’ll be covering a topic that A LOT of merchants have asked us to expand on. So far, the details from Magento to the public and partner communities on the M2 release have been limited.

Making the Move from Magento 1 to Magento 2

Magento 1 will be supported for the next three years! Afterwards, it’s expected that you’ve had enough time to make the transition to Magento 2. Conversely, if you’re looking to be on the Magento platform in the near future your solution partner will be implementing a Magento 2 install.

If you are already in discussions about a Magento install you may be granted a Magento 1.X install on a case-by-case basis. Either way, the Magento licensing model has changed and this will affect new and current Magento merchants.

A New Licensing Model Tailored to Your Business

Magento has historically been a per-server license business. This meant that if you wanted to deploy Magento in a cloud environment to achieve automatic horizontal scaling, Magento licensing was historically very cost prohibitive. We’re excited to announce that Magento will be adopting a per-business licensing model (instead of “per-server”), meaning merchants can build out any type of infrastructure they’d like in their deployment of Magento. Hosting in the cloud will give you the ability to automatically scale up servers based on peak user demand, but you’ll still have the option of having dedicated hardware if that works for you.

A Pricing Model That’s Tied to Your Sales Volume

We can only go public with so much information ahead of Magento, but we were privy to learn about Magento 2 pricing in our training. Merchants will be happy to find out that Magento will be rolling out a licensing model that is aligned with a merchant’s gross merchandise sales volume. This means your pricing tier will be dictated by the sales that pass through the platform.
