I’m about 6 weeks into my role as Merchant in Residence at Demac Media. It feels like the right time to say “hello” again, and give you a peek into what’s been going on behind the scenes.

On Being The First Merchant in Residence

Let’s just start with a candid thought: it’s really strange to be around people again. For the past 6 years, I was either freelancing, consulting remotely or grinding through my entrepreneurial endeavours.

This often meant either being alone all day or awkwardly trying to make friends with the baristas at whichever coffee shop I found myself in. It wasn’t until my friends had finished their own work days that I would feel like a real human again—albeit one with quasi-passable social skills.

Even though it still feels a little weird, I can already feel the amazing impact of being surrounded by a team. Especially when that team is as brilliant as they are generous.

I’m a firm believer in the saying, “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.” Seeing how I was usually the only one in the room for a good number of years, I’m grateful to finally be in a space where I feel like I can learn something from everyone and push myself to elevate my game.

Learning how to Harness my Peers!

Before joining the team at Demac and working on Pela Case, I always learned things on the fly or stitched together good-enough solutions as necessary. I had become an incredible generalist. But now, as Merchant in Residence, I can ask for help and advice from specialists like my colleagues. They see first hand what works and what doesn’t for some of the largest retailers across a variety of markets.

I’ve got close-range access to an invaluable resource, which means I can save time and hopefully avoid expensive mistakes or bad practices. Of course, there may not be a one-size-fits-all game plan for every brand or retailer; but I can prioritize what to focus on with Pela thanks to the tips from the strategy, design and dev teams.

After experimenting with everything from SEO to Conversion Optimization and from Data Analysis to Facebook Ads, I’m happy to report that July has been Pela’s best sales month so far, and August is already on track to double that number!

There’s still a long road ahead, of course; but we should still celebrate the little wins, right? Woot!

In the next update, I’ll sift through more learnings and data, and share some of the most effective strategies and tactics we’re using to grow Pela.

Stay tuned and thanks for following along!
